Between the sun, harsh cleansers, pollution, and aging, our skin often becomes dull and uneven in color. We often develop “brown” spots and see “broken blood vessels” on our face, chest, décolleté, hands, and other places.
IPL is a “multi-tasker” and helps with many of these problems.
IPL treats a variety of skin pigment problems from age spots to sun damage, and improves the color and texture of your skin without surgery.
What is IPL?
IPL therapy remains one of the most effective non-invasive rejuvenation technologies available, and can be used anywhere on the body.
IPL uses high-intensity light energy to penetrate the top layer of the skin and reach the overactive melanin in the skin that has produced brown spots, blemishes, freckles, and uneven skin tone. Once treated by the laser, these areas of pigmentation start to fade on the skin’s surface.
IPL also treats vascular imperfections including broken blood vessels and red areas. In addition, the heat generated from IPL also stimulates collagen production and helps improve skin texture to rejuvenate skin!
IPL can be performed in combination with several other skin treatments on the same day for maximal skin rejuvenation.
Procedures that can be paired with IPL include chemical peels, Vivace RF microneedling, and Tixel skin resurfacing.

The most popular areas for treatment with IPL are the face, neck, chest (décolleté), shoulders, arms and hands because they are the areas most often exposed to the sun, but IPL can be used anywhere on the body.
What can I expect the day of my IPL treatment?
The IPL laser is powerful enough to reach the deeper layers of the dermis but gentle enough that is won’t cause excess swelling, redness, or lasting irritation.
During treatment you may feel a sensation, ranging from a mild sting to the sensation of someone snapping a rubber band on your skin. The device has an advanced cooling system to help any discomfort that occurs. IPL is very well tolerated.
Afterwards, you may feel like you have a mild sunburn for 4-6 hours.
Initially, some of your brown spots will get darker, but they should peel off within a few weeks leaving a smoother skin tone underneath as the new collagen develops.
How many IPL treatments are recommended?
- For optimal results, a series of 3-6 treatments is usually recommended
- Results are permanent but cannot prevent new brown or age spots. For this reason, we recommend patients schedule maintenance sessions every 6 to 12 months to treat any new skin discoloration that develops.
